Principal Report

Semester 2 always starts with a positive reflection on Semester 1 reporting outcomes and our second opportunity for Parent–Teacher Interviews. Our Semester 1 results across the school continue to show incremental improvement, which is a credit to the work of our whole college community:
Semester 1 2023 | Semester 1 2024 | Semester 1 2025 | |
---|---|---|---|
A–C Achievement | 84% | 86% | 87% |
A/B Achievement | 46% | 51% | 52% |
These results highlight the quality teaching of our staff, the commitment of our students, and the support of our families.
Year 12 – General Subjects
Year 12 students studying General subjects have finished their Internal Assessments (IA3), and the focus now shifts to External Assessments starting in October. A range of strategies are used to develop the students’ capacity to achieve their best in these assessments, including:
Reviewing the subject matter that will be assessed, including re-teaching the content and processes in the syllabus
Familiarising students with the language of external assessment, the types of questions that might be asked, and the expected length of responses
Allowing students to view sample external exam papers and practise relevant skills
Enabling students to experience external assessment conditions
Building students’ confidence and ability in sitting these exams
Year 12 students will soon receive information about their upcoming mock exams, which are also used to prepare students for the External Assessments.
Our Guidance Officer, Lisa Cassimatis, has been meeting with Year 12 students to discuss post-school pathway options and support QTAC applications. All Year 12 students are encouraged to meet with Lisa to ensure they have a plan for their future after school.
Term 2 School Review
I had the great pleasure of sharing the executive summary of our Term 2 School Review at the most recent P&C Meeting. Keep an eye out for communication about how you can provide input into our next Strategic Plan.
E-Bikes and E-Scooters
As e-bikes and e-scooters become increasingly popular among students for commuting, it's essential to understand the safety risks and legal responsibilities associated with these devices. While they offer convenience and a sustainable transport option, recent data and community feedback have raised serious concerns in our college community.
Under current Queensland laws:
E-bikes must have motors that cut out at 25 km/h and provide pedal-assist only. Motors must not exceed 250 watts
E-scooters and other personal mobility devices (PMDs) are limited to 12 km/h on footpaths and 25 km/h on roads and bike lanes
Children under 12 are prohibited from riding PMDs, and those under 16 must be supervised by an adult
Helmets are mandatory, and carrying passengers is illegal
Non-compliant devices such as those with throttle-only operation or excessive motor power are not permitted on public roads or paths and may only be used on private property
As with any valuable piece of personal property, students bring these devices to school at their own risk. The school provides a fully caged lock-up area, and students should have suitable locks/chains to secure their bike/scooter in this area. From the start of Term 4, no other parking or storage options will be available to students.
Kind Regards,
Catherine McCarthy

Assessment Expectations
The school’s assessment policy has been developed to achieve consistency, fairness and predictability so students know what will happen based on the choices they make. The assessment policy provides information for teachers, students and parents/carers about roles, responsibilities, processes and procedures to ensure the integrity of assessment that contributes to the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
Our Year 12s were reminded of the assessment expectations in Week 5 regarding the process for applying for extensions and what is required if they miss attending an exam. Students can access a quick guide from the home page of Student Net in the Document Folder of WHOLE SCHOOL RESOURCES. Parents can access the Assessment Policy from the school website.

Year 7
The Year 7 cohort has been working hard this term on three powerful personal qualities — resilience, empathy, and gratitude. Embedded in their English lessons, students have been exploring how these skills help them navigate challenges, support their peers, and appreciate the positive moments in their daily lives. These values were reinforced during a special Brainstorm Productions performance, which highlighted the importance of respect, kindness, and looking after one another in our school community.
Adding a bit of friendly competition to the mix, the Year 7 Connect classes have just kicked off a weekly dodgeball competition. This spirited contest is not only building teamwork and comradery but also inspiring some healthy rivalry between classes. The ultimate prize? A well-earned pizza party for the winning Connect class at the end of the competition!
On the sporting field, our Year 7 Oztag team made BBSC proud by reaching the finals at the All Schools Oztag Tournament on the Sunshine Coast. Their effort, determination, and sportsmanship were a fantastic example of what our students can achieve when they work together towards a goal.
It has been wonderful to see how far our Year 7s have come since the start of the year. They’ve settled into high school life, built new friendships, and embraced the Bayside spirit. I look forward to seeing them continue to grow in confidence, character, and skill as they develop into fine BBSC students who live our values every day.
Year 8
Our Year 8s have launched into Term 3 with enthusiasm and purpose, living our PBL focus: “Come to school, learn each day. Every step, it’s the Bayside Way.” In classrooms, students are engaging positively with new units, collaborating thoughtfully, and showing growing confidence as they tackle increasingly complex tasks. Their curiosity and willingness to have a go are setting a strong tone for the term.
In the arts, musical rehearsals are in full swing. Whether students are centre stage, designing props, or part of the backstage crew, they are demonstrating dedication, teamwork and professionalism. It’s been inspiring to see them take feedback, refine their craft, and support one another through long after-school sessions. Thank you to our staff and families for the energy and encouragement that make these moments possible.
On the sporting front, our OzTag teams represented the school with pride, combining skill with outstanding sportsmanship at the recent OzTag Tournament on the Sunshine Coast. At district athletics, Year 8 students pushed for personal bests and cheered loudly for their peers—exactly the community spirit we value. These experiences build resilience and leadership, and they translate powerfully back into the classroom.
To our students: we are proud of the way you are showing up—ready to learn, ready to participate, and ready to support each other. To our parents and carers: thank you for your ongoing partnership. It’s been a fantastic start to Term 3 for Year 8, and we look forward to the weeks ahead—one step at a time, the Bayside Way.
Year 9
Year 9 – Sailing, Strength & Standing Strong in Term 3
Term 3 has been an action-packed and inspiring time for our Year 9 cohort. We began by tackling the important topic of bullying in our Futures classes – a vital conversation at this stage of life. As always, our Year 9s approached it with kindness, compassion, and a genuine commitment to creating a positive culture.
Beyond the classroom, our students embraced some incredible opportunities. A group took to the water in the Winds of Change sailing program, building teamwork, resilience, and confidence while learning new skills on the open water. Others joined the Blue EDGE program with QLD Police, taking part in early-morning fitness sessions alongside mentoring, goal setting, and healthy lifestyle coaching – an empowering combination for both mind and body.
The arts have also been buzzing with excitement as rehearsals for our school musical, Beauty and the Beast, continue to build momentum. Year 9 students have been shining both on stage and behind the scenes – acting, singing, crafting props, and managing backstage magic. Their commitment, creativity, and team spirit during these busy weeks have been fantastic to see, and we can’t wait for the audience to experience all their hard work come to life.
We also cheered on our Year 9 OzTag team, who played their hearts out at the Term 3 tournament, showing determination, skill, and fantastic sportsmanship.
It’s been a term full of growth, challenge, and achievement, and we couldn’t be prouder of the way our Year 9s have represented themselves and our school.
Year 10
Our year 10 students at BBSC have been taking an important step in their educational journey selecting their senior subjects for Years 11 and 12. This milestone follows the completion of their Careers & Pathways unit in Futures classes, where students explored potential career options, training pathways, and the skills required for success beyond school.
The dedication and maturity our Year 10s have shown throughout this process has been commendable. Many have drawn on insights gained from the Southbank Brisbane Careers Expo, where year 10 students had the opportunity to speak directly with industry representatives, tertiary institutions, and training providers. By using this real-world information to inform their subject selections, students are making thoughtful choices that align with both their passions and their long-term goals.
Alongside future planning, our school community has been focusing on the theme: “Come to school, learn each day. Every step, it’s the Bayside Way.” This five-week focus is a reminder that consistent attendance is one of the most powerful habits a student can develop. Every day at school builds knowledge, skills, and confidence — and missing even a small amount of time can make it harder to keep up and feel prepared. By committing to being here, on time, every day, students ensure they’re not just keeping pace but setting themselves up for achievement in all areas of life.
We are proud of our Year 10 cohort for showing that planning for the future and committing to learning in the present truly go hand in hand. I look forward to continuing to be a small part in this cohort's significant journey into senior studies.
Year 11

Our Year 11 students have had a powerful and inspiring term, stepping up as emerging leaders and active community members through two standout initiatives, the Leadership Day Out and their ongoing community projects.
Leadership Day Out – Rising to the Challenge
In a day filled with excitement and energy, our Year 11s took to South Bank and Brisbane CBD, racing through challenges, solving riddles, and cracking brainteasers in a dynamic city-wide adventure. The event was a true test of teamwork and leadership – and our students did not disappoint. Their behaviour, enthusiasm, and school spirit made BBSC proud. Many natural leaders emerged, and with nominations now open for 2026 leadership positions, the future looks exceptionally bright for this cohort.

Contribute to our community – Year 11/12 Community Projects
Our senior students have also been busy making meaningful contributions to the wider community. From visiting retirement homes and running games at local primary schools, to reading with young learners, creating handmade toys, and revitalising the school grounds with new plantings – their efforts have been broad and heartfelt.
The feedback from community partners has been overwhelmingly positive, with many eager to see these partnerships continue. For our students, these experiences have fostered new skills, a deeper sense of identity, and a lasting connection to their community.
As this term has shown, the leaders of tomorrow are already making an impact today. Well done to all involved!
Year 12

RACQ Presentation on driver distraction
Recently, our Year 12 students participated in an RACQ Driver Distraction presentation that highlighted the potential risks and hazards drivers may encounter on the road. The session focused on how distractions—both inside and outside the vehicle—can affect reaction times and decision-making.
Students received practical tips and strategies to help them stay focused, drive safely, and reduce the risk of accidents. This valuable knowledge comes at an important time, as many of our students prepare to become independent drivers.

Oztag
The Year 12 Oztag team recently competed in their final All Schools tournament, marking the last time they would represent BBSC in this prestigious event. The players performed brilliantly, finishing third in their pool and narrowly missing out on the finals after wet weather affected the competition schedule.
Despite the challenging conditions, the team demonstrated impressive skill, strong teamwork, and outstanding sportsmanship. They should be extremely proud of their efforts and the way they represented BBSC both on and off the field.

100 Days Celebration
Last term, our Year 12 students marked an exciting milestone—just 100 days remaining in their school journey. The celebration was filled with laughter, plenty of photos featuring the iconic 100 Days balloons, and a delicious cake to make the occasion even sweeter.
This special event provided the cohort with a wonderful opportunity to come together, reflect on their time at BBSC, and share some fun moments as they look forward to the final chapter of their schooling. We wish them all the best as they approach this important milestone!

What an Incredible Opportunity for Our Student Leaders!
On Wednesday, 30 July, our student leaders had the unique privilege of visiting the Queensland Parliament, accompanied by Principal Catherine McCarthy. They were warmly invited by Joan Pease MP, Member for Lytton, for an exclusive tour of the parliamentary chambers followed by a special lunch.
This experience provided our student leaders with a fascinating insight into the workings of government and the democratic process. It was an inspiring day that allowed them to engage firsthand with the heart of Queensland’s political landscape.
We sincerely thank Joan Pease MP for this memorable opportunity, which truly enriched our leaders’ understanding and appreciation of civic responsibility.

Year 9 Leaders at Griffith Uni
Our Year 9 Leaders participated in the Griffith University Ambassadors Program, exploring exciting opportunities in sustainable business, tourism & hospitality, and government.
Through a hands-on, practical approach, students developed valuable skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and effective communication.
They took confident steps toward shaping their successful futures, well done to all involved! 👏

Year 10 Career Expo Adventure
Our Year 10 students embarked on an exciting journey to the Careers Expo held at the Convention Centre. This event provided them with a valuable opportunity to explore a diverse range of career pathways, engage with industry professionals, and ask questions that will help shape their future goals.
Attending the expo is an important step for our students as they begin to consider their options beyond school. We are proud to support them in this important phase of their education and encourage them to make the most of every opportunity presented.

Staff Appreciation
Celebrating School Cleaners' Day at BBSC
On Monday, 16 June, we joined schools across the country in celebrating School Cleaners' Day, a special occasion dedicated to recognising the invaluable contributions of our cleaning staff.
At BBSC, our cleaners work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our school clean, safe, and welcoming every day. Their dedication and hard work create an environment where students and staff can thrive.
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to these often-unsung heroes. Your commitment and care make a real difference, and you are truly valued members of our school community.
Thank you for all that you do!

Celebrating Our Incredible Support Staff!
During Week 4, Term 3 (4 August to 8 August), we shone a well-deserved spotlight on the incredible people who keep Brisbane Bayside State College running smoothly behind the scenes.
From Administration Officers and Business Managers to School Officers and IT experts; from Science Technicians and Speech Language Therapists to Social Workers, Agricultural Assistants, Community Education Counsellors, Youth Support Coordinators, VET Coordinators, and every role in between, we expressed our deep appreciation for all that you do.
Your dedication and hard work supported our students, staff, and entire school community every single day, and for that, we were truly grateful.
We also extended a special thank you to the Brisbane Bayside State College P&C for sponsoring vouchers during Support Staff Week and Cleaner's Day, which allowed our amazing staff to enjoy some delicious tuckshop treats!
Thank you again for everything you do!
Keep an eye on our BBSC social media pages for more upcoming recognition weeks and celebrations!

BBSC Oztag Wrap-Up
From Friday, 25 July to Sunday, 27 July, BBSC students took on the All Schools Oztag Tournament with passion, resilience, and unstoppable energy. Our teams gave their all, delivering thrilling wins and close calls that showcased incredible heart and determination. Their efforts made both our coaches and the entire school community proud.
The Year 8 and 10 teams played strongly throughout the rounds but narrowly missed out on finals in a challenging three-pool draw. Due to wet weather, the competition format was suddenly changed, and Quarter Finals were cancelled, a tough break for our Year 9, 11, and 12 teams who missed the chance to push further. Huge congratulations to our Year 7 team, who smashed their way all the way to the Semi Finals, an outstanding effort!
We extend a big THANK YOU to our dedicated volunteer coaches for their time, energy, and unwavering support, as well as to all the families who cheered on our players every step of the way.
Let’s hear it for all our BBSC players, you wore our colours with pride, played with heart, and made us all proud! 🙌💜

It is also important to remind everyone that Gate 2 (the top gate access) is for staff parking only. Only students with approval from Student Support Services are permitted to use this entrance.
By working together, we continued to keep drop-offs and pick-ups running smoothly and safely. We thank all members of our community for their ongoing support!
